Freya had been waiting to do this all day long. She'd woken up in the morning and checked the date in her slayer diary, which as lame as it sounds has actually got her out of some scrapes in the past. "I should really thank Max again," she thought absently about her Watcher as the anticipation grinded down on her. After checking the diary, she got dressed, taking into consideration that she would have to go to fill her Chosen One obligations that night straight after her shift at the Obscurity Records music store. Neon green trainers, with black jeans and a Siouxsie and the Banshees black skinny-tee. A chunky neon green watch, with a bright orange back-light, so she knew the time no matter how dark it got. Knowing the time was mandatory. No point going to a fight if you're going to arrive late and miss all the kicking and screaming. Then after hours of attempting to convince her mother or Max, she was still unable to get a lift, as a result Freya had to walk to Weatherly Park. She wasn't at the park for fun though, not like when she was a kid. Nope. After weeks and weeks of sitting at the dinner table with Max, while her mom provided the food (mainly burgers or noodles) and the Dr Pepper refils, they were able to pin-point the exact time and location of a rather special event.

An event that actually meant the arrival of Judgment Day.

Well...kind of.

It actually meant the arrival of one of the guys who would bring forth the whole end-of-the-world scenario, but this was just step one. There would be three more after this. All the steps were technically the same, kill The Horseman try to stop the Apocalypse. The first one would be rising tonight, or apparating...the text really wasn't clear on that, "as usual", and then Freya Cain would have to kill him. As weird as it sounded, Freya was excited, her stomach turned as butterflies batted their wings. She was going to actually see one of the horsemen. And with any luck, stop him. Freya would be the first to admit that she loves this job a little too much.

She dropped her blue battered back-pack to the floor and then stood up as straight as she could, without going on her tippy-toes. She surveyed the area, no civilians around. A smiled toyed on her lips, as she bent down, unzipped the back-pack and pulled out a thin dagger. The dagger's metal blade looked slight, as if you couldn't really poke a pillow without it bending under the pressure, but this was not the case. The blade had been forged in a magical kingdom that had long-since disappeared, and dipped in the blood of celestial being (whether it was a good or bad being, Freya did not want to know). This little dagger could cause more damage than a bull dozer if used correctly. On the blade was a delicate Ivy pattern carved from the tip and covering the whole blade, and the sheath was a shimmery blue, made from a material that Freya had never seen before. Max did tell her what it was called, but after attempting to say it nine times and failing, she had given up, something that did not happen often.

Unsheathing the dagger she stretched out, and looked around the park, it really was quite pretty. The grass had just been cut, leaving that fresh cut grass smell, and the swings and roundabout creaked gently as the light breeze that was picking up gently nudged them. Little flowers danced gently to a rhythm that only they could hear, and the large trees rustled as if they were the ones making the music, splitting gently in the middle allowing a patch of sky to break through. The patch was wide enough to allow the last rays of the sun through, as it struggled to keep in the sky, like an eye that refused to close because it would miss what was going on around. It was peaceful, and tranquil, and the perfect end to a beautiful day.

The sun finally lost its own battle and it collapsed into the horizon, Freya watched wishing this to not be the last sunset she would ever witnesses. As the color of the sky switched from the reds and oranges of dusk, the purples of night began to sneak in. Until eventually even the purples vanished and all that was left was midnight blue. Freya's watch began to glow orange accompanied with a tiny beeping sound. After gently squeezing a button making the beeping cease, Freya noticed something. The roots of the trees had begun to push up a thick envelope of smoky fog. The fog hung around the ground for a good ten inches before creeping forward, hiding everything underneath.
After a small panic and attempting to back up a little, Freya began to laugh to herself, even with all this thick fog hanging around the ground, her neon green trainers were still slightly visible.

That's when it happened, a loud crack. She had no idea where it came from, or what it signified, but the blood pumped faster and faster in her body. And as she always did during the slay, Freya Cain felt truly alive.

Killian was all business. You could tell by the look on his face, serious, stern, don't-mess-with-me. There was some sort of apocalypse brewing, and as expected, his Slayer wasn't taking it the slightest bit seriously, flapping about some verbal sparring match she'd had at school the day before.

He tried hard not to snap at her, but really, she knew just how to irritate the life out of him. How was she ever going to learn anything, how did she ever have a chance of surviving her teens, if she didn't treat her calling with the respect it deserved. He had practically had to drag her to Weatherly park that evening, her pouting all the way like a child, and him brooding and sulking at her insolence. But now they were inside the park, there was no room for petty squabbling, they both needed to focus if they wanted to keep their heads. Quite literally.

Having ruined a particularly expensive pair of dark jeans crawling through the undergrowth, Killian had finally come to the conclusion that nothing was going to happen before dark, so they might as well find somewhere inconspicuous to wait for whatever evil was heading their way. Shannon had had a wonderful suggestion, which led to his current position. Up a tree.

She wasn't the sharpest tool in the box, his Slayer, but she had something - he hadn't quite figured out exactly what that something was, but he was clinging to it for dear life, his sanity hanging in the balance. She had to be good at something, there had to be a reason she had been Chosen. The day she would prove herself couldn't come sooner in Killian's eyes.

He had chosen the tree, deciding not to argue with her rather ridiculous idea, but to try and make the best of it. It was tall, leafy, with enough branches to hide them from the eyes of anyone - or anything - below. Now, they sat side by side on a high branch, Killian lost in thought about what the pair would be facing that night, and consumed by anxiety over the fate of the sweet blonde beside him. She was new to the job, naive, fresh, he didn't know if she was ready for an apocalypse yet. Which is why he would do everything in his power to protect her. Killian was young, fit, healthy, and trained extensively in a million different fighting styles. He wasn't like other Watchers, which, in his eyes, made Shannon Cooper a very lucky girl to have been assigned someone like him to guide her.

She sat beside him, stake in hand, twirling it like a baton as her feet twitched with boredom or something like it, and Killian couldn't help but glare at her as she began to hum quietly. He didn't know whether to be more annoyed that it would attract attention to the supposedly inconspicuous pair, or because it was completely out of tune. Either she was oblivious to his eyes boring a hole in the side of her head, or she was ignoring him.

"Shannon!" he hissed, a hand snapping out and nudging her in the ribs. She let out a tiny squeal of surprise and dropped the stake, the two of them watching silently as it dropped to the ground, making a loud cracking noise as it connected with the base of the tree. His eyes lifted to hers, jaw set as they stared at each other. "Very stealthy," he whispered, tone short as he gritted his teeth.

Shannon huffed. Sitting in the passenger seat of Killian's ridiculously beautiful red sports car wasn't exactly a chore, but the look on his face made her uneasy, and more than a little irritated. Why did he have to be so serious? She was pretty sure that when he said "an apocalypse" he was just being a big drama queen. It was probably just some jumped up vamp on a power trip.

She allowed him to pull her out of the car and through the gates of Weatherly park, only half listening to his whispered complaints and instructions and warnings. She had been fighting with that obnoxious know-it-all Katy Fields the day before, and it was playing on her mind. Shannon had worn the dress first, so it was blatantly obvious that Katy was the one being a sheep and copying, and she wouldn't hear anything else on the matter. Everyone had seen Shannon arrive first in the frilly, baby blue ensemble, so that was that. Besides, Katy looked awful in blue.

"And I mean, really, truly awful," she said, pulling a face as she traipsed after her Watcher through the bushes, the small bag of weapons at her hip bumping along with every step. She had worn jeans for the occasion, light denim, and a sensible, yet extremely cute apple green t-shirt with a smiling face on the front, comfortable boots adorning her feet. Killian had made her change out of the long skirt she had been wearing when he had arrived to pick her up. Always so fussy. She inwardly rolled her eyes, crashing into the incredibly hot Brit as he stopped dead in front of her behind a large oak tree.

"It's still too light," he informed her, brow furrowing in that insanely sexy way it tended to when he was annoyed or lost in deep thought. "We'll have to find somewhere out of sight to wait." Gosh his accent was wonderful.

Shannon let herself stare at his pretty, pretty face for a few moments, before pointing to the tree they were crouched behind. "How about up there? It's high up, out of sight, and hard to get to. Plus we get a view of the whole park. Excellent vantage point." She grinned up at him, quite proud of her rather genius suggestion, blonde curls bobbing about in a bid to accentuate her happy aura.

But no, it couldn't just be that simple, could it? Killian insisted that the tree she had chosen wasn't good enough, and led her off on her hands and knees through the bushes, and across the other side of the park to a 'better tree'. They were all the same, in Shannon's eyes, but Killian seemed to be happy with his choice. And he looked exceptionally beautiful when he was happy, so she obeyed, as was her duty as his charge, and shimmied up the tree, settling on a sturdy branch hidden above the leaves.

It was a long wait, and Shannon was not the patient type. It didn't take long for her to become so bored she started looking for something to occupy her to help the time pass. Her stake was the lucky winner, and she proceeded to amuse herself by twirling it about like a baton - or a staff, and she was a ninja, in a tree. Ninja Shannon! She stabbed at the air in front of her with the wooden weapon, imagining herself in a ninja outfit, kicking vampire ass. Ha! I don't need a ninja outfit. Those ninja's should be jealous of me. The Chosen One. She loved thinking of herself as 'The Chosen One', a silly grin spreading across her face as she began to hum happily.

A sharp, unexpected poke in the ribs caused her to let out a startled squeal, the stake flying from her grasp, dropping like lead to the ground below and, instead of landing on the soft grass, it cracked loudly against the trunk of the tree, the sound echoing across the deserted park. She watched it fall, mouth open, eyebrows raised in an almost entertained way, eventually turning her face to the right, eyes meeting Killian's breathtaking blue-green ones - oh, she could look into those eyes forever - as they stared at each other. "Very stealthy," he whispered, glaring. The glare didn't bother her, it was far to sexy to have any kind of negative effect on her.

Surely it wasn't right for her to have such a crush on her Watcher? Anyway, with a roll of her ice blue eyes and a sigh, she shoved herself off of the branch, climbing swiftly down the tree and landing gracefully on the ground, which now had a soft covering of fog, and stooped to pick up her stake. It was then that she saw it, something lime green and glowing on the other side of the path, though the vastly thickening fog was obscuring her vision, stopping her from being able to identify the object.

"Killian!" she called in a loud hiss, eyes darting up the tree for her Watcher. She had a feeling whatever they had been waiting for had arrived, and suddenly, despite her Slayer strength and abilities, Shannon Cooper found herself afraid, and not too keen on being down there on her own. Her stance shifted, body tensed, ready for a fight, her right arm raised, stake in hand, eyes never leaving the lime green thing hiding in the mist as her senses went into overdrive. She still wasn't used to the overwhelming tingling sensation she got down her spine when her Slayer senses kicked in, was still quite freaked out by the things she noticed which, had she still just been an 'ordinary' girl, she would have been oblivious to. Would she ever get used to this?

"That loud crack had to have come from somewhere...?" Freya thought-out-loud as quietly as she could, hoping that no one would pick up her voice.

She focused, putting every little bit of effort into trying to pick up any other sounds, a sign of where the noise had come from. She had to be honest with herself though, she had expected the Horseman to make a bit more of an entrance than a loud crack. Truthfully, it was a bit of a let down. Freya concentrated, and there it was. Another sound. Coming from the direction of the trees. The fog beneath her was getting thicker, obscuring everything, a perfect hiding place. She lowered herself a little more into the fog, hiding as much of herself as she could without losing her fighting stance. She would have to be prepared no matter what. The dagger was hidden in the fog too, perfect for an unexpected attack.

The noises from the tree sounded more like voices, but Freya shook it off, and put it down to her own sense of paranoia. No other human would be stupid enough to hang around the park when it was like this. "This is Sunnydale, don't they know better." Her eyes couldn't see completely over the fog, but rather than expose herself, Freya remembered those training sessions with Max.

Max Kenn, her Watcher had taught her many things. One of them was how to deal with sensory depravation. It had been a dark day, and the rain had poured heavily. They were in a small room in an abandoned warehouse. He had placed a blindfold over her eyes and silently moved around the room, attacking at random moments with a Bo staff. It had been around twenty minutes before she had even blocked one attack, but as soon as she did it, her slayer senses kicked into overdrive and a surge of life coursed through her veins, she was unstoppable. Every attack was blocked, and she able to attack back. Every hit hitting, and every block blocking. Everything had seemed silent a few seconds ago, but now everything had a sound. Every movement. And she knew just what she had to do. Max and Freya practised this technique to perfection. Standing in Weatherly Park fighting without sight was something she knew she could do, so Freya closed her eyes and relaxed in the fog. Letting the silence take over her. She would hear this creature coming, no matter what!

Following the voices in the tree was the sound of someone jumping, from a tree branch it would seem. The branch had creaked as the pressure lightened and the leaves had shook gently as something passed them. Whatever it was, it was trying its hardest not to make a sound. It landed on grass with the gentlest of thuds. Then there was nothing but silence again. Something was definitely there because what Freya heard next was beyond any doubt a voice. A female voice. It shouted a word Freya didn't understand. Maybe it was part of a spell. Unsure whether it was the Horseman or just a vampire looking to make a new friend, she pulled a stake out of the back of her jean waistband jst incase. She always came prepared, a prepared slayer is one that has a chance of survival was something that Max (and her mother) had drilled into her brain. In one hand a dagger and the other a stake. She would be ready to take down this...whatever it was.

Her fighting pose still perfect, she shifted in the fog, carefully and slowly, headed for the tree where the noises where coming from. Whatever it was, getting out of this park alive, was not an option it had left. It was on her territory. Freya grinned, thrilled that a fight was going to ensue. She loved being a Slayer. Loved fighting the bad guys. Most of all, she loved saving this world, and if getting bloody every now and then was the price, it was one she was always willing to pay.

Killian heard Shannon hiss his name from below, but his eyes were fixed on something else, attention focused on the figure not too far away, crouched in the fog. Being so high up, he hadn't thought to take much notice of the thick mist that was slowly enshrouding the whole park, and Killian mentally kicked himself for not being more alert. Of course it was a sign, no doubt this Horseman he had been informed about by the council was getting too close for comfort.

But comfort was a luxury Killian or the sixteen year old girl below him didn't get the pleasure of. They were the ones that had to be there, they had no choice in the matter, if the fate of the world and all its occupants meant anything at all.

The figure began to move, slowly weaving across the park in their direction, and Killian could almost feel the tension and slight panic emanating from his Slayer. She needed him. It was silly, weak of him to go to her, to give in to her fears and baby her like she so wanted. How would she ever survive on her own if he kept on running to her side whenever her lip trembled? It's early days, he told himself reasonably, she still hasn't had a chance to settle in to this world yet. She needs you.

Having convinced himself that being maybe too caring wasn't a bad thing just yet, he slowly reached his hand up over his shoulder, grabbing the handle of the sword strapped to his back, and sliding it silently out of it's sheath as he prepared to descend the tree and stand by his Slayer against the approaching danger. That was until the fog cleared a little and he caught sight of the figure in the mist.

A girl. A small one, at that, slim, delicate looking, wearing illuminous green trainers and.... carrying weapons. Instinct kicked in as his eyes roved over the strange girl. She wasn't an enemy. That's what it told him. He was almost sure of it, but it didn't stop him from clambering down the tree and grabbing hold of Shannon's arm, pulling her behind him - with a great deal of effort, as she was tensed like a rock - and holding his sword in front of him like a shield. There was no need for it, but the strange girl wasn't the only danger lurking in Weatherly Park that night, in fact, Killian didn't think she was a danger at all...

"Show yourself!" He called, trying to make his voice loud enough for the girl to hear, but not loud enough to carry to the rest of the park, drawing unwanted attention to them. It was so typical. Everytime the utmost stealth was needed, something would crop up and complicate things. Killian gritted his teeth with frustration. The last thing they needed tonight was more complications than neccessary, it was dangerous enough. The blonde behind him had no idea just how much danger they were in, he had tried to tell her, but her tendency to panic had caused him to go easy on the severity of the situation, hoping she would realize in the moment and pull it together when it was needed.

The fog was becoming sticky, the smoke was somehow becoming thicker and as it glided over her skin it was beginning to gain heat. The fog itself seemed like a lifeform. Freya knew this as impossible, how could fog kill someone. It didn't matter right now, it had to be her mind playing tricks as she listened careful to the noises that were getting closer and closer, with her eyes closed and her slayer hearing kicking into overdrive, Freya was able to hear a metallic sound, as if a metal weapon (probably a sword) was whisping through the air. Then the scuffled noise of someone trying to silently but quickly get down the tree. Freya breathed in deeply realising there was two of them, but instantly regretting the quick intake of breath when the fog oozed into her windpipe and tasted of graveyard. A weird taste she noted, as if the dead had risen and there stench was starting to rise too, thick, clammy and not at all pleasent. "What I wouldn't give for a cold glass of Dr Pepper right now", the slayer thought. The fog was becoming difficult to handle, and definately hotter.

Then an English accent caught her attention. The person behind the accent was a man, a little older than her, and English. "Show yourself!" She froze. Not knowing what to do exactly, she just stood there. Weapons ready, fighting stance, slightly lifting her left heel in case she needed to run quickly or kick hard. She was prepared. She took half a deep breath, stopping half way through after the fowl taste the last time she decided to breath. Her eyes snapped open, but she was shocked. "Maybe closing my eyes was not the best idea I've had all day," she thought hesitantly. The fog was even more thick, she was not imagining the clammy texture or the deathly taste, it was real. This could not be good. The Horseman was coming, he was closer, this had to be a sign. Whoever this guy was, she would have to deal with him, and whoever was with him, and do it quickly.

She stared at the two, once again shocked. They didn't seem to be vampires. She didn't feel like they were. Usually a vampire or a demon, or anything evil-ish sent a sort of stabbing tingle down in the pit of her stomach. Nothing painful, just her slayer system warning her there was trouble about. But not even a gentle jab. She stared at the man holding the sword in front of him. He was confidant, Freya gave him that, but it didn't look the same case for the girl behind him. She looked scared, not sure what she was meant to do, she stood behind him allowing him to protect her. A stake was held up high in her hand, a little too high for a low attack or block in Freya's opinion, but that was unmistakably a stake in that girls hand. The girl was a little younger than Freya, possibly still in high school, and her smiley face t-shirt said everything Freya needed to know about this girl. She was innocent. The smiley face was not ironic, it was not some sort of statement, it was simply a smiley face that would have looked cute with those bouncy curls. Undoubtably, she was not prepared for whatever was coming.

The man on the overhand, confidant, protective and weapons ready for attack. He knew what he was doing. So why the hell had he brought this little girl out to a place like this. If Freya wasn't so annoyed with his stupidity, she would have considered him to be attractive, not exactly her type, but attractive none the less.

The fog was becoming unbearable, "that's it, their not a threat, I'm out of this", Freya made the decision and slowly rised out of the thick and dank fog. The fresh air instantly hit her face, and as her skin began to cool down she noticed that there was a thin film of sweat on her forhead. If she had stayed under there anymore, she'd be suprised if she didn't come out with a tan. That fog was more than supernatural, and if she didn't get the love-birds out of the park now, it might be too late. Never lowering her weapon, and never giving them the chance to proove her wrong, Freya stood up stronger and straighter, never putting her left foot fully down.

She stared directly at the guy, a stern look showed the fierceness in the eyes, she had to scare them off. Even if he knew what he was doing, was he and his little bimbo really prepared for what was coming. She spoke to them clearly, but trying her hardest not to make it so loud that even a man on a horse could sneak up and attack them. "Seriously...show yourself! You see someone in an eerie fog on a dark night, and your first instinct is to shout show yourself? Do you have any idea what's really going on here...look it's dangerous," she stared directly at the man now, "maybe you should take your date and get out of here quickly, I think Pretty Woman's still got one showing, I'm sure she'dlike that better than what's going to happen here."

Freya muttered undecipherly to herself, mocking the man completely, "show yourself...amatuers."
